Pen and brown ink with brown and grey-brown wash on thin laid paper, 153 x 221 mm. Within graphite ruled border, tipped onto thick paper. Signed and dated in brown ink lower left: ‘Jean de la Chambre 1674 12/8’. Very small tear in lower edge and minor creasing far left, otherwise in excellent condition. Lit.: Thieme Becker; Van der Willigen, Haarlem, pp. 109-112. In the Rijksmuseum (Rijksprentkabinet) a drawing in similar style of a Roman soldier on a horse, signed and dated ‘Jean de la Chambre 1678 9/27’ [not 1624, as is stated on the website]. Jean de la Chambre was the son of a famous Haarlem schoolmaster and succeeded his father as such. His drawings are very rare.
