Portrait in an oval of Jan van Hout (1542-1609), secretary of the city of Leiden. Latin inscriptions on the frame of the oval and underneath. On the top: ‘WSwanenb. sculp. Anno 1608.’; on the oval: ‘IANVS HAVTENVS REIPVBL. LVGDVNO-BATAVÆ A SECRETIS NATVS ANNO M D XLII. DIE XIV DECEMBRIS.’; on the bottom: ‘Inclijta Lugdanum, manibus seruata tuorum, / Cum tua tecta fames, cum tua pressit Iber; / Aspice cui bonas media vel pace trophæum, / Aspice quem ciuem non pudet esse tuum. / Scribendo manus illa tibi plus profuit olim, / Quam quæ pro patrijs concidet vsta focis. / DH.’ where DH stands for Daniel Heinsius, who wrote the poem.
