Frontispiece to the second volume of the History of Holland by J. Le Clerc, published in three volumes in 1730 (Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden). The personification of Holland is sitting holding arrows in her hands, on the left Mars and on the right Mercury. A lion is lying under the woman. On a drape hanging towards the lower part of the composition the title reads:’GESCHIEDENISSEN / DER / VEREENIGDE NEDERLANDEN / DOOR / MR. JEAN LE CLERC. / TOM II.’ At the feet of Mars: ‘G de Lairesse inv.’; at the feet of Mercury: ‘I. v. Munnichuysen sculp.’
