Frontispiece to the 1690 translated third edition of Florimond de Raemond’s (1540-1602) ‘Histoire de la naissance, progres et decadence de l’heresie de ce siècle.’ This contra-reformation work deals with the origin and history of the Protestant heresy from a Catholic perspective. This work was originally published in 1605. It contains a addendum about ‘Jeanne de Pausinne van Roomen’, the fable of a female pope, which was originally published separately in 1587. In this edition 30 engraved portraits of historic figures are surrounded by a decorative border with devils, snakes etc. or angels, putto’s etc. depending on the religious standing. In the background rises St. Peter’s cathedral, while in the foreground a femal figure [Ecclesia] is slaying the six headed dragon representing Calumny with her papal ferula. On the pedestal the title of the publication: ‘FLORIMOND REMONDS / OPGANG, VOORTGANG, / EN / NEDERGANG / DER KETTERYEN / DEZER EEUWE. / HET I DEEL’. For the frontispiece to the second volume the same plate was used, with a different Roman number. On the bottom on a ribbon held by a putto seen from behind: ‘ ’t Antwerpen Bij Ieronijmus Verdussen woonende op / d’oude Coremerckt inde Gulde Tes met privilegie’. Signed on the bottom on the left and on the right respectively: ‘Henricus Verbruggen delin:’ and ‘Gasp: Bouttats sculpsit.’
