An instrument maker is seated on a chair in his workshop, holding one of his lutes from the neck, in the other hand he is holding a sharp pointed knife. A man stands right next to him, gesturing with his hands probably pointing at the lute. He is wearing an apron and appears to be the master discussing the design of the instrument with the instrument maker. A river landscape is visible through the opened window in the background. In the workshop other instruments are depicted: the stringless body a viol stands on the bottom right on the right of the picture whereas violins and other lutes are hanging from the ceiling. Titled above: ‘MENSELYK BEDRYF. / DE INSTRUMENTMAKER. / ’t Is goed of kwaad, Naar ’t oogwit staat. ‘ and below the picture: ‘Het snaarenspel, een spys der ooren, / Hoe aangenaam en uitverkooren, / Dat van de speelkunst werd bereid, / Zo’t uw gemoed niet diend tot trappen, / Om tot den oorsprong op te stappen, / Dan is’t; als alles, iidelheid.’
