Monumental title page of the edition of the ‘Corpus Juris Civilis’ by Ulrich Zasius (1461-1536) initiated in 1548 and terminated in 1550. Titled: ‘DN. Vdalrici Zasii … Responsorum iuris ciuilis libri 2. Intellectuum item singularium in varia iurisconsultorum veterum responsa libri duo, accessione non modica ex ipsius authoris monumentis locupletati. Addidimus Tractatus aliquot ex eiusdem authoris officina profectos, … cum duplici indice, rerum & capitum, copiosissimo’. Monogrammed on the left, on the shield under the atlas. The printer’s device is of the Senneton brothers – Jean, Jacques and Claude. It was used between 1544 and 1575 and represents a salamander, crowned and surrounded with fire. The related motto reads: ‘VIRTUTI SIC CEDIT INVIDIA’ which means that virtues endure envy. This device was not an exclusive of the brothers; it was in fact employed by Maurice Roy, Louis and Charles Pesnot with whome they were cohoperating
