Full vellum with some damage to the corners. Else a good copy with a 19th-century ownership mark by J.F. Schellens (1820). 8°, pag.: [8] 114 [6]. With 26 folded engraved plates. Mattheus Soeten worked as a teacher in Amsterdam, combining mathematics and astronomy. From 1709 until 1743 he was appointed at the Atheneum in Amsterdam, as lector in mathematics. In 1702 he published his Medulla algebræ, of ’t merg der stel-konst (Amsterdam, J. ten Hoorn, 1702), as an introduction in mathematics for young students. The present manual on sundials was presumably published for the first time in 1708. The online NCC also mentions an edition published in 1712. Soeten dedicated his book to Dirk Bas, burgomaster of Amsterdam. Johannes Loots was active in Amsterdam between 1696 and 1721 as a publisher of books on mathematics, geometry, astronomy and navigation. * 4 A-G 8 H 4.B0104
