Representation of the death of admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676). During the battle of Augusta in Sicily de Ruyter was heavily injured: a cannon ball shot from the French hit him on the leg. This injury costed de Ruyter’s life. Here the admiral is represented with his soldiers watching over him during his last moments on the ship he commanded. Inscribed above: ‘N. PIENEMAN’, and signed below the representation: ‘A.C. Nunnink / Uitgave van J.J. VAN BREDERODE te Haarlem / Lith. van Emrik & Binger.’ Titled on the bottom: ‘ADMIRAAL DE RUYTER. 22 APRIL 1676’
