1828, 4pp handwritten diary in ink, only 4 handwritten pages out of several more, laid paper in contemporary binding (folder), The author is a student/pupil and is asked by his teacher to accompany him on a trip to Benthiem and from there to Steinfurt. They start on 28 Junij (June) 1828 from possibly Westzaan/Koog aan de Zaan to Amsterdam with a private coach, then with a diligence to Utrecht where they changed coaches. They had lunch in Voorthuijsen and continued to Deventer where they stayed in Logement De Kroon. Mr Bekking provided the entertainment in the evening (Societeitstuin). The following day they took a rented private coach to Bentheim. Having arrived in Goor they took a ‘diner a la fourchette’ at A. van Delden. They reached Bentheim and were not very impressed by the state of affairs. The beer and wine consumption in the badhuis (bathing house) posed some problems too. They joined Mr Kooman/Koman (?) for a trip the next day to Steinfurt. They travelled with The Dutch Painter Van Os, a lady, the author and his companion in the coach owned by mr Hoffman. They arrive in Steinfurt and visit the ‘bagno’ (a famous park with lots of buildings and entertainment) and see the grotto (caves). They dine at Schutdorf and return in Bentheim in the night. Mr Hoffman invites them to his house in Bentheim the next day and shows them around in the city. They visit the castle and that is where the manuscript ends just after the story of the erstwhile prisoners being thrown in a deep well. Possibly written by either Evert de Jager, Pieter Groen, Arie de Bruijn or Pieter Honigh (see also nr. 71877 Journal). The painter Van Os that is mentioned is most likely Pieter Fredrik van Os (8 October 1808 – 31 March 1892) who was a painter from the Northern Netherlands. He was the son and pupil of Pieter Gerardus van Os and worked mainly in the spirit of his father. He travelled through Belgium and Germany before settling in Haarlem in 1839. Nice but short personal account of a trip through Holland and parts of Germany.
