The Crucifixion of Jesus, with Christ on the cross between the two criminals. A soldier on horseback at his side pierces his side. Mary Magdalene and three other figures stand weeping at the bottom of the crosses.
Mezzotint on laid paper, sheet size 608 x 439 mm. Made by Frederik Christiaan Bierweiler after Peter Paul Rubens. This print was published around 1820 and published by J. Groenewoud in Amsterdam.
Frederik Christiaan Bierweiler (Amsterdam 1783-1831 Amsterdam) was a Dutch publisher, printmaker and painter. As printmaker he was mostly a mezzotinter. He was probably pupil of Hodges. From c.1818 to early 1820s he worked in Germany.
In poor condition. Margins cropped within platemark, but full platemark present. Paper loss and small tears in the edges. Creasing in the left edge of the sheet. Creases in the middle from top to bottom, a few small nicks in the paper along this line. Tears from the lower edge extend a little into the image. All edges reinforced with paper tape on the verso.
