John George III, Elector of Saxony in plate armor standing near a table, about to pick up his helmet from the table. He holds a baton in the left hand. A black servant with feathered hat holds his mantle.
Mezzotint on laid paper, sheet size 535 x 481 mm. Mezzotint by Pieter Schenk (I) and published by him in Leipzig, 1706.
Pieter Schenk (I) (Elberfeld 1660-1711 Leipzig) was an engraver who became a major publisher of prints and maps. His own prints are mainly mezzotints, mostly copies of portraits and topography. He became a partner of Gerard Valck in Amsterdam around 1680, and later married his sister. From 1700 he established a business in Leipzig where he would die in 1711 during a business trip.
In fair condition. Original middle fold, with a tear in the left edge. Tears in both side edges, small paper loss in the right edge. Circa 5 cms. of loss of image area in the top and bottom edges. Old restorations using paper and archival tape on the verso.
