Map of the Western half of the United States including Mexico (Texas, Nebraska, Kansas mostly visible). With inset maps of San Francisco, German colony Wartburg, the area around Boston, the rail route between Panama and Chagres, Panama, and New York Bay.
Outline coloured engraving on wove paper, sheet size 709 x 437 mm. Designed by Johann Georg Heck and engraved under his supervision. Published by J.C. Hinrichs, Leipzig, 1855.
Johann Georg Heck (Strassburg 1795-1857 Leipzig) was a German lithographer, cartographer, georgapher, author and publisher. He is remembered for his work on 'Bilder-Atlas zum Conversations-Lexikon. Ikonographische Encyklopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste', a direct rival in German language encyclopedias to Meyers Konversationslexikon.
In good condition, a horizontal fold (as issued). Several small creases and nicks in the margins. Some larger tears in the margins (closed with acid-free archival tape). Some discolouration in the margins, a few creases.
