Oval bust-lengh portrait of Guy Patin (Hodenc-en-Bray 1601-1672 Paris), a French doctor and man of letters. Patin was doyen (or dean) of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris (1650-1652) and professor in the Collège de France starting in 1655. (Wikipedia)
Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 260 x 215 mm., platemark 151 x 108 mm. Attributed to Etienne Desrochers, and published by the same in Paris, c. 1726. This print was probably part of the series 'Recueil de portraits de personnes qui se sont distinguées tant dans les Armes que dans Belles-Lettres et les Arts, comme aussi la famille royale de France et autres cours étrangères'. This series was initially published by Desrochers, Gilles Edme Petit continued the series after Desrocher's demise.
Etienne Desrochers (Lyon 1668-1741 Paris) was a French printmaker, printer and publisher, active in Paris. He specialised in portraits, and worked with a large workshop of assistants. 332 plates were published as a series under the title 'Recueil des portraits des personnes qui se sont distingués …'
In very good condition. Ample margins. Some soiling and imperfections in the margin edges. The image area clean and crisp, a fine impression.
