Oval bust-length portrait of an unknown man with moustaceh and goatee, wearing a skullcap. With a four-line caption in Latin by Sangenesius.
Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 287 x 198 mm. Engraved by François de Poilly, made in the second half of the 17th century.
François de Poilly (Abbeville 1623-1693 Paris) was a French engraver. He was the son of a goldsmith who gave him his first drawing lessons. He was apprenticed to the Parisian engraver Pierre Daret. Poilly then travelled to Rome where he stayed for seven years with the engraver Cornelis Bloemaert, where he acquired mastership of the art.
In very good condition, cropped to or within platemark. Fine impression, with a few spots of ink in the image area (on the collar).
