Beschrijving
Oval bust-length portrait of Pierre Varignon (1654-1722), a French mathematician. He was educated at the Jesuit College and the University of Caen, where he received his M.A. in 1682. He took Holy Orders the following year.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 241 x 176 mm. Engraved by George Vertue in London, dated 1725. With a French biographical caption below the image.
George Vertue (1684-1756) was an English engraver and antiquary, whose notebooks on British art of the first half of the 18th century are a valuable source for the period.
In good condition, cropped within platemark on the right side, cropped to the platemark top and left sides. Stains (from glue?) in the right margin (not affecting the image area). A small stain in the lower margin.
