Oval bust-length portrait of Paul de Rapiun in chestplate and with curly wig. Paul de Rapin de Thoyras (1661-1725), was a Huguenot historian writing under English patronage. His History of England, written and first published in French in 1724-27, was influential for the Whig view of history on both sides of the English Channel.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 251 x 194 mm., platemark 234 x 174 mm. Engraved by Jacob Houbraken (as indicated on later states) after the painting by Jan Hendrik Brandon. This print was published as frontispiece in: Rapin Thoyras, Paul de. Histoire d'Angleterre. The Hague: Alexandre de Rogissart, 1724-1727, dated 1726.
Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) was a Dutch engraver and the son of the artist and biographer Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719), whom he assisted in producing a published record of the lives of artists from the Dutch Golden Age.
Jan Hendrik Brandon or Jean Henri Brandon (Sedan 1660 – 1714 Utrecht) was a French-born Dutch painter.
In very good condition, right margin faintly dampstained (not affecting image area), some general soiling in the margins. A nice, early impression of this plate.
