Portrait of Aegidius Menagius, also Gilles Ménage (1613-1692), a French scholar and advocate in Angers and at the Parliament of Paris (1632). Without taking holy orders he joined the church, becoming Prior of Montdidier, and dedicating his life to litterature.
Engraving on hand laid paper, attached to a contemporary carrier sheet, sheet size 213 x 145 mm., platemark 192 x 129 mm., carrier size 280 x 220 mm. Engraved from life by Robert Nanteuil in 1652. This print was made to illustrate an edition of the works of Menagius.
Robert Nanteuil (1623-1678) was a French portrait artist, engraver, draughtsman and pastellist to the court of Louis XIV.
In excellent condition, attached to carrier by all four corners.
