Trompe-l'oeil portrait of Claude de Marolles. Claude de Marolles (1564-1633) was a French navy and military figure who served during the Wars of Religion (1562-1598). He was the father of Michel de Marolles.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 247 x 190 mm. Engraved by Claude Mellan, and published in: Marolles, Michel de. Les Mémoires de Michel de Marolles, abbé de Villeloin. Paris: Antoine de Sommeville, 1656, as one of three portraits. The portrait of Michel de Marolles is dated from 1648.
In good condition, cropped within platemark. A small extension of paper is added around the image, for new margins. This new margin soiled. The image area qith some scattered light foxing.
