Oval bust-length portrait of Charles II de Cossé, in armor and with ruffled collar. Charles II de Cossé, 1st Duke of Brissac (c. 1550 -c. 1621) was a French noble, military commander, governor, courtier and rebel during the latter French Wars of Religion.
Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 228 x 158 mm., platemark 153 x 111 mm. Engraved by Sébastien Pinssio after Monogrammist N, and published in: Dreux du Radier, Jean-François. L'Europe illustré, contenant l'histoire abregée des souverains, des princes, des prélats, des ministres, (…) en Europe: dans le XVe. siècle compris, jusqu'à présent. Paris: Michel Odieuvre en André-François Le Breton, 1755-1765.
Sébastien Pinssio (born 1721-active 1755) was an engraver in the employ of Odieuvre.
In very good condition, margins faintly foxed overall. Image area quite fresh.
