Beschrijving
Oval half-length portrait of Paul-Bernard de Fontaines (Lorraine 1566-1643 Rocroi), also known as Comtefontaine. He was a commander of the Spanish infantry during the Eighty Years War, and Vogt of Bruges and governor of Damme. He participated in the battles around Hulst, Kallo and Antwerp. He is depicted in armor, holding a baton, and with a battle scene in the background.
Engraving and etching on hand laid paper, sheet size 254 x 168 mm., platemark 158 x 114 mm., by an anoynmous engraver, published by Balthazar Moncornet, Paris, c. 1640-1668.
In good condition, ample margins, attached to carrier sheet by all four corners. Mild soiling in the top left and right corners.
