Portrait of Sir John Chardin, head and shoulders in an oval frame, wearing wig and cravat, his coat of arms below the portrait.
Engraving on laid paper, sheet size 238 x 161 mm., engraved by David Loggan, c. 1675-1690.
David Loggan (Gdansk 1634-1692 London) was an English engraver, born in Gdansk. Loggan's father came from an old Oxfordshire family, and went to Gdansk in the late 1620s and early 1630s. There he married a local girl in February 1634. David was born six months later. Sandrart states that he was a pupil for four years of the Dutch engraver Willem Hondius (who had settled in Gdansk in 1636), and that after his death, he went to Amsterdam between 1656 and 1663 where he studied with Crispijn de Passe II for seven years. He then went to London, intending to continue to France and Italy. But the success he had with a drawn portrait of Cromwell (never engraved) induced him to stay in England, where he would remain for the rest of his life. While highly succesful as a portrait engraver in the 1670's, the rise of mezzotint hurt his business, causing his business to end in debt.
In good condition, cropped within platemark (with loss of caption). A diagonal crease from the right edge into the decorative border. Two horizontal creases in the lower edge of the portrait area. Remains of attachment to carrier on the verso.
