Portrait of Élie Catherine Fréron (1718-1776), a French literary critic and controversialist whose career focused on the Counter-Englihtenment, partly through his periodical, the Année littéraire. Fréronrecruited young writers to counter the literary establishment, and in this way became central to the movement now called the Counter-Enlightenment.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 248 x 187 mm., platemark 184 x 124 mm. Engraved by François Hubert after the design of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, dated 1770.
François Hubert (Abbeville 1744-1809 Paris) was a French printmaker, and a student of Beauvarlet.
Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1715-1790) was a French engraver, designer, writer and art critic. As his father has the same name, he is variously called Charles-Nicolas Cochin le Jeune (the Younger), Charles-Nicolas Cochin le fils (the son), or Charles-Nicolas Cochin II.
In good condition, foxing and browning in the margins, the image area mostly clear.
