Beschrijving
Oval portrait of Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), the third son of King George II and his wife, Caroline of Ansbach. He was Duke of Cumberland from 1726. He is best remembered for his role in ending the Jacobite Rising at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Allegorical frontispiece, with the oval portrait on an obelisk, with mythological figures near the obelisk, and a herald angel above. In the background are mourning 'paupers … weeping at their sad Change'.
Engraving on hand laid paper, with hand colouring, attached to carrier sheet. Sheet size 178 x 108 mm., carrier size 211 x 142 mm. Anonymous engraving, the frontispiece for vol. 34 of the London Magazine (1765).
