Portrait of Louis Verdet (Nancy 1744-1819 Sarreguemines), a French priest and politician, deputy to the National Assembly of 1789.
Aquatint portrait within etched decorative border, on hand laid paper, sheet size 227 x 173 mm. Engraved by 'Mme Cernelle' after Lambert. Published in the series 'Collection générale des Portraits de MM. les Députés à l'Assemblée Nationale Constituante, tenue à Versailles le 4. Mai 1789'. This series was published by Nicolas-François Le Vachez in 1789.
'Mme Cernelle' is Émira Marceau-Desgraviers (Chartres 1753-1834 Nice), a French engraver in etching, stipple and aquatint. She was first married to Champion de Cernel in 1768 (hence the name Madame Cernel[le], here), and later to Antoine François Sergent in 1795. She was then known as Maria Sergent. In 1794 took name Emira (anagram of Marie).
Jean Baptiste Ponce Lambert (active at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century) was a French painter.
In very good condition, cropped within platemark. Some soiling in the margin edges.
