A portrait of Lafayette. Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834), was a French aristocrat and military officer who volunteered to join the Continental Army, led by General George Washington, in the American Revolutionary War. After returning to France, Lafayette became a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830 and continues to be celebrated as a hero in both France and the United States. Ary Scheffer (1795-1858) was a Dutch-French Romantic painter. He was known mostly for his works based on literature, with paintings based on the works of Dante, Goethe, Lord Byron and Walter Scott,[2] as well as religious subjects. He was also a prolific painter of portraits of famous and influential people in his lifetime.
