Portrait of Johann Jakob Scheuchzer, half-length, holding a thistle. In front of him coral, a shell, fossils, and crystals. A mountain with waterfall in the background, and two goats near the peak of one of the mountains.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 193 x 130 mm., engraved by Joseph Nutting after Melchior Füssli. This print was used as a frontispiece in: Scheuchzer, Johann Jakob. Ouresiphoites Helviticus, sive itinera Alpina tria. London: Henry Clements, 1708.
Joseph Nutting (active c. 1660-1722) was an English engraver and publisher, and a student of John Savage in London.
Johann Melchior Füssli (Zurich 1677-1736) was a Swiss draftsperson, engraver and bopok illustrator. After travelling trhoughout Germany for some years, he returned to Zurich in 1697, where he opened an engraving workshop with publishing company and established a monopoly in the region.
In very good condition, cropped within platemark and attached to carrier sheet. Biographical information in manuscript ink on the verso.
