Portrait of Balthasar Hubmaier. Balthasar Hubmaier (1480-1528) was an influential German Anabaptist leader. He was one of the most well-known and respected Anabaptist theologians of the Reformation. This portrait is the only currently known portrait of Hubmaier.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 166 x 120 mm., carrier size 328 x 258 mm. Engraving by Christoffel I van Sichem, published in: Sichem I, Christoffel van. Historische beschrijvinge ende affbeeldinge der voorneemste hooft ketteren. Amsterdam: Chistoffel van Sichem I, 1608. A German edition of this book was published in the same year. It is unclear from which edition this engraving comes.
Christoffel I van Sichem (Amsterdam 1546-1624) was a Dutch engraver, printer, draughtsperson and publisher. Two of his sons (Carel and Christoffel II) also became engravers.
In very good condition, cropped within platemark and attached to a carrier sheet.
