En profil bust-length portrait of Johann Caspar Lavater. Lavater (1741 – 1801) was a Swiss poet, writer, philosopher and theologian, but mostly remembered for his work in the field of physiognomy.
Etching on laid paper, sheet size 174 x 104 mm., carrier size 355 x 223 mm. Etching by Johann David Schleuen (I) after Christian Bernhard Rode, c. 1740-1774.
Johann David Schleuen (I) was a member of the Schleuen family of Berlin printmakers. He was active from 1740 to 1774. He was a publisher and printmaker (of mostly portraits).
Christian Bernhard Rode (Berlin 1725-1797) was a German painter, a puupil of A. Pesne.
In good condition, attached to a carrier sheet by the top edge. Cropped within platemark. Some smudging in the edges, a small crease in the right edge. A good, clean impression, with a small spot in the image area.
