Etching, engraving and stipple work on wove paper. Sheet size 159 x 123 mm. Engraved by William Holl (the Elder of the Younger, unclear), after William Owen. This print was published as an illustration for: Jerdan, William. National Portrait Gallery of Illustrious and Eminent Personages of the Nineteenth Century. London: Fisher, Son & Co., 1831.
William Holl the Elder (1771 – 1838 London) was a British printmaker and reproductive engraver. Four of his sons, Benjamin, Francis, Charles and William Holl the Younger, were instructed in the art of engraving by their father. Most of the sons also embraced the new technique of steel engraving.
In fair condition, cropped within platemark. Some general toning in the margin edges, some stains around the image area. Pinholes and a tear in the lower edge (affecting the facsimile signature of Exmouth).
