‘The Little Grinder’. A young man stands at a grinding wheel in front of a half-open barn door, sharpening a knife. A boy and girl are watching, and a cat and dog are also present.

Pierre Duval le Camus (Lisieux 1790 – 1854 Saint-Cloud) was a French painter and lithographer who specialised in portraits and genre scenes. His father was a master glazier and sent him to Paris to learn the trade. However, Pierre found himself attracted to the arts instead was taught by Claude Gautherot. From 1808 he would study with Jacques-Louis David.
We have not been able to identify 'Lion'.
In good condition. A dampstain in the lower left margin corner. The margins generally a little soiled.A crease in the top left, crossing the corner of the image.
