‘The Herlad of Murcia’. A herald on horseback blowing on a trumpet from which a flag with coat of arms is suspended.
Wood engraving on wove paper, sheet size 412 x 298 mm. Engraved in wood by Charles Baude after a design by Ernest Meissonnier. The sheet was printed and published by E. Plon & Cie, c. 1870.
Charles Baude (Paris 1853 – 1935) was a French wood-engraver, a pupil of Guillaume. He worked for several famous art periodicals, including 'L'Illustration' (1879-1888), 'Harper's Bazaar' (1888-1897), 'Le Monde Illustré' (1888-1896) and 'Illustrated London News' (1892).
Ernest Meissonnier (Lyon 1815 – 1891 Paris) was a French painter, lithographer, sculptor, illustrator en graphic artist. He was the father pf Jean Charles Meissonier.
In good condition. Some small nicks in the margin edges, minimal foxing in the lower margin. A faint crease in the top left corner. None of these slight defects affect the image area.
