A central, partly frozen stream runs through the image, a bridge in the background. A snowy wooded path on the left, and a two-story building on the right of the stream.
Etching with plate tone on wove paper. Sheet size 250 x 330 mm., platemark 203 x 274 mm. Signed in the plate by the artist. Estimated to be made around 1905.
Oskar Paul Matthes (Kaliningrad 1872 – 1956 Bergholz-Rehbrücke) was a German autodidact lithographer, etcher, draughtsman and painter. From 1901 to 1910 he was active in the Netherlands, before moving to Luzern, and later Potsdam. Most of his etchings are landscapes and cityscapes.
In fair condition, the top edge irregular, with some paper loss and faint creasing (not affecting image). Right margin edge browned and with small nicks. Some general small creasing in the margins.
