‘The Effect of the Light in the Casbah, Agliers’. A single figure walks in the shadows of a structure, underneath diagonal wooden beams.
Etching with plate tone on laid paper. Sheet size 220 x 153 mm., platemark 151 x 90 mm. Made by Philip Zilcken, and signed by the artist in the lower right margin. Numbered 525 in pencil in the lower left margin (also numbered in the plate). As Zilcken made study trips to Algiers in 1883 and 1908, this print was probably made during one of these trips.
Philip Zilcken (The Hague 1857 – 1930 Villefranche-sur-Mer) was an engraver, etcher, biographer, photographer and art critic. He became 'secrétaire intime officieux' to Queen Sophia of the Netherlands at the age of sixteen. He was editor of Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift between 1896-1905. Zilcken made numerous reproduction prints after paintings of the Hague School.
In very good condition, minimal soiling in the left margin, two small stains (from previous attachment) in the top left and right corners.
