Engraving on laid paper, sheet size 234 x 327 mm. Engraving by Johannes Josephus Aarts, after his own design. Signed in print and in pencil lower right, monogrammed in the plate (below the farmer's hand). Printed by Roeloffzen, Hübner en Van Santen (Amsterdam), ca. 1885-1898.
Johannes Josephus Aarts (The Hague 1871-1934 Amsterdam) was a printmaker, art teacher and author. He taught at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (The Hague), and was later successor to Pieter Dupont at the Rijksacademie Amsterdam. Many of his engravings feature beggars and scenes from daily life.
Beautiful line and stipple engraving, a fine impression with only a few small spots in the image area. Cropped within platemark in the right and top right edges.
