Beschrijving
Without place or printer, 1630, 4to., half leather binding, with gilded title on spine, reading from bottom to top ‘[Spain and the Netherlands] Treves-krack – 1630’, [16 pp.], flyleaves are discoloured, but otherwise a beautifully bound copy of the text in good condition. The first two signatures show the printed text, the rest of the book consists of blank pages, apparently inviting the reader to make their own notes. The first page of the main text has a small tear.
This book presents us with a conversation between Langhe Piet and Keesje Maet. They discuss the ’treves’, a twelve years' truce, a ceasefire during the Eighty Years' War (Tachtigjarige Oorlog) between Spain and the Dutch Republic, agreed in Antwerp on 9 April 1609 and ended on 9 April 1621 (Verdrag van Antwerpen). There is a play on words where the one mentions ’treves’, talking about the truce, and the other replies with ’travers’, talking about a breastwork, a temporary fortification.
An interesting booklet in relation to the Eighty Years' War, published in 1630, before the war was settled in 1648 with the Peace of Münster and the Dutch Republic gained indepence from Spain.
