Seated portrait of Johannes Florentius Martinet (Deurne 1729 – 1795 Amsterdam). Martinet was a theologian, preacher, author and scientific historian. He was an important author for Natural Theology, a type of theology that strives to prove theological arguments through science and reason.
Engraving laid paper, sheet size 186 x 130 mm., made by Reinier Vinkeles after his own design, and published by Johannes Allart, 1778. This print was used in: Martinet, Joannes Florentius. Katechismus der Natuur. Amsterdam: Johannes Allart, 1778.
Reinier Vinkeles (Amsterdam 1741-1816) was a Dutch draughtsperson, printmaker, etcher and watercolourist. He was a prolific illustrator of books, made historical prints and detailed portraits, that were in great demand during his lifetime. Johannes Allart (Windesheim 1754 – 1816 The Hague) was a Dutch publisher, active in Amsterdam.
