Half-length portrait of 'Janus Dousa, Noortwici toparcha, v.g.' (Johan van der Does), in chest armor and with a sword at his side, one hand resting on a baton. A city in the background. Johan van der Does (or Janus Dousa 1545 – 1604) was a Dutch statesman, historian, poet and philologist. He became first Librarian of Leiden University Library.
Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 407 x 297 mm., dated 1649.
Made by Cornelis III Visscher, and published in Haarlem under supervision of Pieter Soutman. Cornelis III Visscher (Haarlem 1628 – 1658 Amsterdam) was a Dutch printmaker, painter and draughtsperson. He was the brother of Johannes and Lambert Visscher. Pieter Soutman (Haarlem 1593 – 1657) was a Dutch printmaker and painter. He became an assistant to Rubens in Antwerp in 1616.
In very good condition, margins cropped within platemark (no loss of image). Two faint horizontal creases in the middle of the sheet, and a flattened diagonal crease (only visible on verso).
