Large landscape with Hagar seated on the ground in despair, with the empty jug beside her. Ismaël lies beside her. An angel point Hagar toward the waterfall to save them. A flute-playing shepherd with sheep higher up on the mountain.
Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 400 x 296 mm., platemark 316 x 241 mm., engraving by Willem van Nieulandt (II) (1584-1635) after Paul Bril (1554-1626), published by ‘A. Bon enfant’. This print is part of a series of similar Italian landscapes after Paul Bril. This bears the number 22 in the lower left. The middle fold suggests this series was bound together in a book.
In good condition, original middle fold, two creases in the lower left margin corner, also a faint dampstain in the lower left margin corner. A tear from the lower margin into the image, with old restoration. Some small stains in the top margin.
