Portrait of Jean-Sifrein Maury (1746-1817), a French cardinal, archbishop of Paris, and former bishop of Montefiascone. Below the portrait a frieze depicting Maury surrounded by an angry mob.
Etching (frieze) and aquatint (portrait) on wove paper, sheet size 279 x 437 mm., aquatint by Charles Levachez (active 1760-1820), etching by Jean Duplessi-Bertaux (1750-1818) after his own design, 1797.
An interesting sheet, mixing two graphic techniques for very different effects. In very good condition, although cropped within platemark on all sides.
