Portrait of Jean-Marie Roland de la Platière (1734-1793), a French inspector of manufactures in Lyon and later leader of the Girondist faction in the French Revolution. He served as a minister of the interior in King Louis XVI's government in 1792. Below the portrait a frieze depicting people finding the corpse of De la Platière, on the road from Paris to Rouen.
Etching (frieze) and aquatint (portrait) on wove paper, sheet size 284 x 436 mm., aquatint by Charles Levachez (active 1760-1820), etching by Jean Duplessi-Bertaux (1750-1818) after his own design, 1798.
An interesting sheet, mixing two graphic techniques for very different effects. In very good condition, although cropped within platemark on all sides.
