Portrait of Pope Innocent X (Latin: Innocentius X; 1574-1655), born Giovanni Battista Pamphili, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 15 September 1644 until January 1655.
Etching on laid paper, sheet size 303 x 437 mm., platemark 267 x 338 mm., etching by Emile Buland, after Velazquez, and printed by Charles Chardon for the periodical 'L'Art', c. 1880
Jean-Emile Buland (1857-1938), was a French painter, engraver, lithographer and illustrator. Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660), was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV, and one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age.
In excellent condition, with only some faint scattered foxing in the right margin. The collection stamp of the Print Rooms of Leiden University on the verso (Dubbel R.P.K.L., Lugt 700b).This famous painting can still be seen at the Galleria Doria Pamphilii in Rome.
