'Wilhelmus Vtus, Margaretae et Lud. Bav. f.'. Oval portrait of William V, Willem V in Dutch (1330 – 1389), the second son of Emperor Louis IV and Margaret II of Hainaut. He was known as William V, Count of Holland, as William III, Count of Hainaut and as William IV, Count of Zeeland, as well as William I, Duke of Bavaria.
Etching and engraving on laid paper. Sheet size 319 x 421 mm., platemark 293 x 400 mm. Made by Cornelis Visscher. Number XXV in the top edge of the image.
The work 'Principes Hollandiae et Westfrisiae', written by Petrus Scriverius, was published in 1650 by Pieter Soutman in Haarlem, and contained a total of 38 portraits of the Counts of Holland, from the year 863 onward.
In very good condition, a few small spots of foxing in the margins. Some faint creasing in the left edge of the sheet.
Petrus Scriverius (1576 – 1660), the latinised form of Peter Schrijver, was a Dutch author and scholar on the history of the Low Countries, as well as classical literature.
