Manuscript. Handwritten charter dated to 4 January 1568 that passed in front the ‘burgermeester en schepenen’ of the city of Saeftinghe. Robrecht van Haeften (e.a.) states he owes Lord Peter of the Doornick Cathedral money. The surety is specified as a patch of land. Robrecht van Haeften helped build a dike around Leuijsland, which afterwards was called Haeftenland. Interestingly, in 1584 (during the Eighty Years' War) the city of Saeftinghe was flooded and disappeared. The region at the border of Belgium and the Netherlands is now known as the ‘Sunken land of Saeftinghe’ (In Dutch: Het verdronken land van Saeftinghe) and preserved as nature reserve.
Parchment, 30×31 cm, small to no margins on top and right side, no seals or other attachments remain, though slits are visible that problably housed such tokens. The Dutch handwriting is in brown ink and difficult to read.
