CONVOLUTE:
Leiden (Lugd. Batav.), Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1630, 8vo., full parchment spitsel binding (spitselband) with intact handsewn headbands, coloured edges, stamped initials (PGW), date (1659) and floral decoration on the front, floral decoration on the back, handwritten titles on spine, closure ribbons have been lost, [6]+359+[8] pp., apart from some worming on the inside of both covers and some damages in the paper of the first and last few blank pages, this book is in excellent condition with a solid construction, the unusual size (11.5×5.5cm and 7cm thick) is a remarkable feature, contemporary note on flyleaf stating that the book was bestowed upon his son Guillelmo (Willem) by Joannis Guillelmus Walraven, dated: Herborne anno 1659. Engraved titlepage with motto (‘honi soit qui mal y pense’, which translates as: shame on anyone who thinks ill of it, and was used as the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter) and heraldic crests of the seven Dutch provinces, decorative initials.
