[1901], 86 pages, original paper binding, offprint from La Revue d'Histoire Diplomatique 14th and 15th year, Sir Gabriel Sylvius (?-1697) undertook diplomatic missions to Brandenburg-Prussia, Braunschweig-Luneberg-Celle and Braunschweig-Luneburg-Calenberg in 1669. He was engaged in negotiations with the Dutch in 1676 in London and later served as an envoy in Denmark-Norway and northern Germany c.1680-1688, accompanied by his secretary Thomas Fotherby. During this mission he travelled to Hesse-Kassel in 1680 and Braunschweig-Luneburg-Wolfenbuttel in 1681. Dispatches from him dated June 1685 to June 1686 from Denmark to Lord Middleton still survive. He thereafter became British Resident in Hamburg in 1686. Written by Johan Hendrik Hora Siccama (1842-1914).
