First edition, 4 volumes (of 4). A nationalistic historical noval, portarying the fictional Maurist Lijnslager as the examplary Dutchman. A reprint of 1812 was cancelled by the French authorities. A second edition wasn't publiched until the restoration of Dutch independancy in 1814. Handwritten ownership signatures from different periods: ‘Is. An. Nijholt’, ‘J.H.B. Buisman Jr. 8/4 1944’ and ‘R. de Ree 1974’.

Loosjes Pz., 1808, 8vo., half leather binding, marbled paper on the front and back of each binding, 403+ 362+420+439 pp., worn copies: boards exposed on the edges, spines damaged, volume I and II: loose front covers, some torn pages, some waterstains, illustrated title page (volume I , engraving by R. Vinkeles) and four more engravings by R. Vinkeles (one in each volume).
