Collection of 44 manuscripts and printed works concerning the Dutch region Zeeland, with handwritten entries dating from 1585 until 1767 and printed works dating from 1770 until 1783, containing a handwritten table of content. For instance: a letter addressed to Willem Hendrick, prince of Orange (Willem III) dated to March 18th 1659 (3), a letter from 1680 by Cornelis Mogghe with wax seal addressed to the secretary of the city Veere with a request to lease some land (8), a letter from 1689 to Willem III complaining about the nomination of two regents, i.e. Johan Ferleman and Daniel Thijssen Bastiaans (17), a verdict sentencing General P. de la Rocque (1679-1760) for his neglect concerning the city of Hulst. This detailed verdict has been published in print, but here we find a handwritten representation (37), a negative response by the High Court to Adriaan Speljards request to dissolve his marriage to Maria de Bruine dated to 1850 (38), a printed statement by Paul Changuion (ex secretary of Vlissingen) rectifying his prosecution in 1770 (40), a court statement dating to 1770 concerning Adriaan Steengracht versus – among others – Jacobus Jasperssen Brasser and the inheritance of Marinus Huibrechtsen (41).
The collection shows a variety of hands and offers all sorts of legal documents concerning the nobility of Zeeland during the late sixteenth to eighteenth century. Entries 24, 27 and 32 show the hand of Wessel Becker in a note on the back, a prominent figure in Zeeland during the end of the 17th and start of the 18th century. Some entries have clearly been sent as letters: fold lines, wax seals and blind stamps are visible.
