Famous book based on the diaries of the ill fated commander who died in 1885 during the siege of Kartoum at the hands of the Sudanese Mahdi. The army that was sent to relief Kartoum arrived two days late. Gordon was already beheaded and 10.000 soldiers and civilians were murdered. A newspaper clipping is inserted from 1928 discussing the Kartoum crossing.
