Beschrijving
Woodcut on parchment, by Duisberg (Duisberg f.), 20 x 16 cm (when folded open: 31,5 x 16 cm). The decoration consists of a border depicting various Dutch regions (Zeeland, Utrecht, Overijssel, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen) and city crests (Amsterdam, Haarlem, Gouda, Delft, Dordrecht, Rotterdam, Leiden, Enkhuizen, Alkmaar, Franeker, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Amersfoort, Deventer). This border is identical on the front and back of the binding. On the inside of the border there are different illustrations. On the front we see a classical illustration depicting Hermes (Mercury) the messenger of the Gods, with a lion and the three Amsterdam crosses. On the back we see three soldiers with drums (tamboers). This illustration was also found on the binding of an almanach dated to 1774, so we can presumably date this binding to the 18th century as well (https://arinevandersteur.nl/product/derfg-stigt-burger-wagt-almanach-op-t-jaar-ons-heeren-jesu-christi-1774-voorzien-met-de-jaer-paerde-beeste-en-leer-marckten-als-mede-de-maens-op-en-onder-gang-en-hoog-en-laagste-water-ge/ jan. 2025).
It is unknown what book was bound inside this binding.
