Guykens, 1831, 16 pages, half cloth library binding, library stamp on titlepage, minor hole in last few pages, some soiling, Jan Carolus Josephus van Speijk, also written Van Speyk (31 January 1802 – 5 February 1831), was a Dutch naval lieutenant who became a hero in the Netherlands in 1831 for his opposition to the Belgian Revolution. He allegedly blew up his gunboat with its crew to prevent it being taken by the Belgian revolutionaries. Written by Carel Godfried Withuys (2 May 1794, Amsterdam – 14 February 1865, The Hague) who was a Dutch writer and poet. Much of his work was patriotic in nature, especially during and after the Belgian Revolution of 1830.
